Lyrics: In my eagles nest I sit and scan the horizon for Evidence of enemy attacks We’re so afraid of invasion, that we charge our emotions cannons Our minds become the weapons of mass destruction And rather than prepare, rather than prepare for the worst We strike out at each other again Send in the troops to guard the ones we love Use iron brick and steel and bury yourself in sand It’s the only way to keep the upper hand Whispers echo in surround sound They’ll never find you, never find you here Cover me in armour, protect me from myself Protect me from what I’ve become, I need a helping hand Cover me in armour, protect me from myself Can’t you see this is emotional? If it moves If it moves shoot If it moves shoot it If it stands If it stands still If it stands still paint it Did they respond to the signal? Did they try to sneak past? Take aim and fire Take aim and fire! A shot across the bow The first official shot that’s the accolade we’ve got

Lyrics: I could kiss a hundred other girls but it wouldn’t change what happened I could write some hate-filled lyrics but you’d probably never read them I could cut myself… just to watch it bleed If I thought for just one second it could stop me from thinking Where do you get off? Happy fucking birthday Where do you get off? Happy fucking birthday Burning all the memories that I ever shared with you Has taken some drinking and still it’s only culled a few Scratched the surface, there’s still so many left to go Gradually I’ll destroy them all, every single one and so Where do you get off? Happy fucking birthday Where do you get off? Happy fucking birthday Every picture that I see With every guy that isn't me Every time I hear your name From lips that are not mine Every time I see your image Every time I catch my breath Every time I drag the sharpened point across my empty chest You stole my heart You drank my blood You took me places that I hadn't been since I was sixteen And now you’re feeding on the ruins of this angst-ridden fool You stole my heart but you forgot to take the feeling with you You stole my heart but you forgot to take the feeling Now the only way to get a minutes peace is to open up the bleeding You stole my heart I wish you’d take the feeling with you You stole my heart I wish you’d take the feeling with you

Lyrics: It crept up slowly, it started well before you had noticed And when it took shape, it hit you like a wave You needed a break but you got broken Needed to speak out but you got outspoken You had no escape, cause there was nowhere left to run Now you’re running out of ideas And you’re searching for ideas It took you a long time, to travel to where you had wanted to be It took you a lifetime, to see it was just a falsity You’re just a contender, we’ll never remember Another contestant washed out to sea Do you even recall? Or is it just a distant dream? Now you’re running out of ideas And you’re searching for ideas So when I come knock on your door, like I did the night before Will you let me in? Will you let me in? And when I say goodbye tonight, will it be goodbye this time? Will you let me in? Will you let me in? So when I come knock on your door, like I did the night before Will you let me in? Will you let me in? And when I say goodbye tonight, will it be goodbye this time? Will you let me in? Will you let me in? And when I say goodbye tonight, please just say goodbye this time Just say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye Cause I’m running out of ideas And I’m searching for ideas And I’m running out of ideas And I’m searching for ideas on how to say goodbye

Lyrics: Waking to a world So infinitely messed up it must be part of some evil genius’ experiment Trying to understand We need to get along but we can’t exist without conflict Given the power of intellect, a handful of clues A desire for knowledge and second hand shoes Pretty girls and messed up rules Make believe and social stigma too Treading water with beaten up limbs; broken arms and battered heads Trying to stay afloat in an ocean of sins; a life time of regrets A mental picture of distress Social abandonment of simplicity Paperwork and red tape tower toward the sky, tower towards the sky Does regret equate to blunder? Given a second change is there something new that you would try? Given the power of insight, a handful of clues A desire to dominate and enforce our own views Pretty girls and messed up rules Make believe and social stigma too Treading water with beaten up limbs; broken arms and battered heads Trying to stay afloat in an ocean of sins; a life time of regrets A mental picture of distress No way home No way home Do you call this home? There’s no way home Pretty girls and messed up rules Make believe and social stigma too Life’s a practical joke; someone’s idea of a sense of humour You’re four feet under, that’s just the way it goes Where do we belong?

Lyrics: When these conditions pass and things return to normal we’ll put it back We wipe the blood from our hands to pass it to future generations We’ll wipe the blood from our hands We’ve wiped the blood from our hands Take all that you want but only what you need I offer everything to you But if you leave some for me I won’t be here to see When there’s nothing left for you We own the rivers, we own the lakes and all the damned We own everything, we hold it close in selfish hands But if we continue to abuse it like we do There’ll be nothing left to own because there’ll be nothing left at all There’ll be nothing left at all You’ll turn the tap and nothing will come out Flick the switch and the lights will stay out What will you do? Where will you go? When there’s nothing, nothing at all? Take all that you want but only what you need I offer everything to you But if you leave some for me I won’t be here to see When there’s nothing left for you But if you don’t leave some for me I won’t be here to see when there’s nothing left for you

This is track three from "Fragments of the Lost Album". Anti Social Commentary's 2008 album that was thought lost for good until a an export of 8 of the tracks was recently discovered on an old hard drive. You can read about that discovery here: https://steemit.com/music/@trevorpetrie/an-unexpected-discovery I wrote Masks at a time when I was mixed up with a crowd who generated more drama than a daytime TV soap opera. It was a very dark period of my life, full of negativity, blame games and mind games and a lot of hurt for a number of people involved in it all. For me, Masks is really about hiding from true intent and doing everything you can to mask the reality of your situation and your state of mind. Masks also just happens to contain one of my favourite couple of lines that I've ever put in to a song. I feel like they not only sum up how I felt at the time but also very much the crux of what it means to be human: "I thought 'd want to live forever but I know I'm not going to It's just a foolish dream that I never believed but I've been holding on to." I hope you enjoy the track. Cheers, Trevor Lyrics Picking up the pieces one by one, to put them in order To see if I can build a dream or come up with something real I've been pacing the length of this hallway and it's wearing a hole in my shoe Problems always seem to come in threes, never come in ones and twos. And you just hide behind your masked behaviour of suicide attempts And peer group pressure that you breed And will you hide behind those masked intentions and indiscretions? Will you bite the hand you need? Picking up the pieces one by one to make it happen I'm thinking of driving somewhere, anywhere, just to mix it up. I thought 'd want to live forever but I know I'm not going to It's just a foolish dream that I never believed but I've been holding on to And you just hide behind your masked behaviour of suicide attempts And peer group pressure that you breed And will you hide behind those masked intentions and indiscretions? Will you bite the hand you need? Picking up the pieces one by one to make you happen To see if we can build a deam And you just hide behind your masked behaviour of suicide attempts And peer group pressure that you breed And will you hide behind those masked intentions and indiscretions? Will you bite the hand you need? Take my hand, take my hand and lead me Take my hand, take my hand and lead me Take my hand, take my hand and lead me Take my hand, take my hand now leave me

This is track two from "Fragments of the Lost Album". Anti Social Commentary's 2008 album that was thought lost for good until a an export of 8 of the tracks was recently discovered on an old hard drive. You can read about that discovery here: https://steemit.com/music/@trevorpetrie/an-unexpected-discovery Layers of Separation is written around a rather unusual topic The web publishing rule of separation, at the time, helped us to explain the best practice and implementation of HTMl, CSS and JavaScript, generally making the interwebs a better place. Not exactly your typical inspiration for what on the surface, sounds as though it's a song about a girl. I guess even when you've made an unintentional career out of being an IT professional, you're bound to write at least one song about computers in some form or other. This song takes me back to my first ever supervisory role. I was heading up a an IT support group staffed entirely by University Info Tech and Business students. It's probably the most enjoyable job I've ever had. It was incredibly rewarding to be around enthusiastic students who were eager to learn and to put their knowledge into practice. It was one of my then staff who suggested I write a song about computers. I gladly took up the challenge and couldn't be happier with the result. This is also one of the only songs I've written that has a key change. While you wouldn't want to do it in every song, a key change is a super effective way to give a big lift to the finish of a song. Lyrics The only thing that’s unique about her is the division of her structure into a set of acted out methods Regardless of the data she receives or the logic that she uses She’ll be difficult to contain and it won’t go away She’s responsible for her style But not unhealthy obsessed with aesthetics and application Don’t be fooled into thinking you can alter her impression If you’re messing with structure you’re messing with her head Responsibility and validation She’s looking for transportation A side-step solution for an age old process She usually conforms without duress She’ll remain tied to the layers of separation Dynamic interactions and real-time effects She’s attracted more attention than she knows from those who admire But she plays by her rules so you must be unobtrusive to gain consideration Planning for a future is always complex; is she somewhat separated from what comes next? Responsibility and validation She’s looking for transportation A side-step solution for an age old process She usually conforms without duress She’ll remain tied to the layers of separation She knows it’s time to settle on what she will present Should she go for radical or traditional or her tried and tested method She knows she can accomplish anything she sets her mind upon Best handled tenderly with love and care but she’ll delegate affection if you let her Responsibility and validation She’s looking for transportation A side-step solution for an age old process She usually conforms without duress She’ll remain tied to the layers of separation

This is track one from "Fragments of the Lost Album". A song about a Feathertail Glider "Diego" who was rescued by a firefighter during a bushfire. Lyrics: You watched it move in and wipe you out You did your best to flee; to get out safely Every sight and every sound Made your exhausted heart pound profusely Light as a feather: weak as a bug It was out of your hands whether you’d survive
She found you hiding in the ashes You were tired, scared and famished She found you crying in the ashes We thought that you were finished Diego she rescued you
Just when you thought the end was near You felt a strangers touch against your ear She lifted you up; she carried you She gave you the strength to pull through
She found you hiding in the ashes You were tired, scared and famished She found you crying in the ashes We thought that you were finished She found you dying in the ashes You were tired, scared and famished Diego she rescued you

Trevor has written his share of breakup and unrequited love songs before but this song is different. It's about a relationship that's broken down but not through anger, affair or hate but through lack of communication and not giving the relationship the time it deserves. Lyrics: I’m going to put this story to bed before the heartache fractures my head. There’s no need to explain for I can see the pain in your eyes. It’s washing over us both like a wave, there’s nothing here we can save, except maybe the thought that there’s something we ought to have done. Don’t despair my love, it’ll be alright, it’ll be alright Don’t despair my love, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine And now I rummage through all the nightmares I sent to you, searching for a shred of truth and a piece of your heart. And I can see it clear in my reflection in your tears, I should have faced my fears, for now fear is all I know. Don’t despair my love, it’ll be alright, it’ll be alright Don’t despair my love, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine Take me away from it all There’s no peace of mind, no piece to find any more Take me away from it all There’s no peace of mind, no piece to find any more Don’t despair my love, it’ll be alright, it’ll be alright Don’t despair my love, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine

A Stranger to Wisdom is about that moment when you realise you've messed up. When you know it's time to change because you know you can be better. Lyrics: I picked up the paper to bury myself cause every once in a while it's good for my health. And I searched all the columns for traces of where we went wrong There's a tear on the sofa that we blame on the cat but we both know who's really at fault for the fact that we can't look past all this trivial shit for one minute And when I finally think that the chatter's all dead some useless memory enters my head and it reminds me that I've been in worse places before But you said it's over when you said it's over I said tomorrow is another day You said it's over Yeah you said it's over And I looked at you and I smiled at you I looked at you and I said Tomorrow is another day I took a ride on my steel horse to calibrate my tact. Make some sense of all the nonsense I've been parading as facts. And if I just tune out, will it all just blow itself away? I switch it off because I don't want the invaders in my home. And I switch it on because I can't deal with this silence in my own. I guess there's good reason for saying that ignorance is bliss But you said it's over when you said it's over I said tomorrow is another day You said it's over Yeah you said it's over And I looked at you and I smiled at you I looked at you and I said Tomorrow is another day So when tomorrow's nearly here will I have wasted my chance? Stumbled on my two left feet and ended this dance? Or will you still love me just like you did yesterday? But you said it's over... You said it's over... Yeah you said it's over You said it's over And I looked at you, and you frowned at me I looked at you and you just frowned at me I looked at you and I said... I love you

Ashes and Ribbons is about letting go of your past and breaking free of limiting beliefs. The ashes represent your past, your fears and your regrets, the cutting of the ribbons represents new beginnings. Lyrics: I’ve been pushing this shopping cart of ideas Singing its praise to preoccupied ears Hoping that someone will attend to my fate And worried that I’ve figured it out too late There’s a trail of confusion and misguided events All bound up and hanging like old fishing nets There’s barely and room amongst this noise and this mess For me to hide anymore regrets I’m changing pace and taking mark And when they fire that gun, I’ll ignite the spark These baby steps I’m taking are gathering pace And although there’s no prize for winning this race It’s the journey I choose to applaud And I no longer feel I’m a freak or a fraud The ashes of all of these dated decisions They help me to sharpen the scissors and cut through the ribbons Now I won’t make excuses and I won’t be ashamed I won’t point the finger or delegate blame I’m back in control; got my hands on the wheel And this impossible daydream is becoming real I’m changing pace and taking mark And when they fire that gun, I’ll ignite the spark The ashes of all of these dated decisions They help me to sharpen the scissors and cut through the ribbons

Trevor wrote this song the day after watching "Searching For Sugar Man" a film about a songwriter who failed to gain a following in his home country (the USA) but unbeknownst to him, inspired an entire generation in South Africa. "One of my take-aways from the film, is that it is easy to forget to make time to sit and reflect. To enjoy what you have, and not to worry about what you don't have. It's a powerful and moving film that I would encourage any artist or songwriter to watch." Lyrics: This emblem I’ve been wearing has got people staring. I hope they can’t see through my charade. Because it’s a pretty price I pay for living different lives both night and day. I aint sure it’s gonna work out right. And these thoughts I’ve been collecting just haven’t been connecting, I get on and off and off and on the line. And I’ve been listening to the prophet but I’m sure I still don’t got it. I’ve got the answers but I just can’t find the time. So take these lyrics I’ve been scratching into eggs that won’t be hatching and slam them in the faces of the youth. With all their instant gratification and their shameless masturbation, they’ll never understand the beauty of solitude. And all I really want is some silence from all the anger hate and violence but I’m as much to blame as everyone else. And for all I’ve come to see and understand what burdens me I’ve done nothing but simply get this off my chest. And will I fight, will I fight for you? And will I fight, will I fight for you? Will I fight, will I fight for you? Will I fight or will I find something new. This emblem I’ve been wearing has got people staring. I hope they can’t see through my charade.

Track 6 from Anti Social Commentary's third EP "It all starts again". Lyrics: Is this the only plan that you considered? Is this the only way you thought that it could ever be? Did you take into consideration? Did you think of anybody other than yourself? Yourself, yourself, or did you think of me? Yourself, yourself or did you think of them? Yourself, yourself, did you think it through? - 2 -3 - 4. Is this the day you’ll be forgiven? Or is this the day for which you’ll be forever judged? Is this the day we’ll be mistaken? Or is this the day you bring it, you bring on yourself? Yourself, yourself, you bring it on yourself. Yourself, yourself, did you think of them? Armed with warm inviting tones and melodies Trevor Petrie is a songwriter and performer from Bendigo, VIC, Australia. Having grown up in the nearby town of Kyneton - a small regional town which in the early 90's had an abnormally high youth suicide rate, Trevor turned to music as a way to deal with his struggles and teenage emotions. Lion In the closet describes Trevor’s journey in overcoming depression; from admitting there is a problem to finally breaking the negative cycle.
