‘Blinking Dots’ features loose, layered trumpets by Kafele Williams (Sgt. Leisure, Razors) and a jumpy, frenetic toy keyboard sound played by Waning Gibbous founder Brett Kelly. Combined with unfocused electric bass, a lush backdrop of synths, and the small “ting” of Manjira cymbals, the song feels like making your way home after a long night, looking blurry-eyed down rainy city streets.

Ambient, Experimental, Improvisational, Electro-Acoustic, Space Music, Solar Eclipse
‘August 21, 2017’ is a special Waning Gibbous track, likely the only one to appear in the canon not recorded on a full moon. Instead, this extra piece was added to the timeline of Waning Crescent as a total solar eclipse passed over the continental United States, on August 21st, 2017. Carried by synth and fuzz bass recorded directly following the celestial event, the 8 minute track also features a field recording captured over the period of second contact, totality, and third contact.

A capriccio is characterized as a short piece of emotional, improvised music making free use of tempo and form. This song features leaping electric guitar manipulation by Omaha's Vince Swaney, over a bed of sirens, guitars, violins, drums, and a whimpering Great Dane named Tula.

Aching, intertwining electric guitars give way to a voice which brings on a frenetic, stabbing noise section. This track perhaps expresses, sonically, the cyclical comfort, pain, and comfort of contemporary mass consumption and waste.

This "title track" sets the mood for Waning Gibbous' sophomore album, 'Last Quarter', with paced swells over washes of cymbals traced by a sampled beat, electrical glitches, and a whispered, circular phrase. Last Quarter is the second work in the eight-album lifespan of Waning Gibbous. Its 12 songs were created and recorded spontaneously on the evenings of full-moons, between November 2015 and October 2016. Waning Gibbous is an open collective of musicians based in the mid-western United States.

The 3 recordings used in Follow the Yellow Moon Home - the final track of Waning Gibbous' debut album - were made separately from one another on the first full moon of July 2015 (there were 2 that month). This track is also the only one placed out of chronological order on the album. It features a dreamy, moving bit of electric piano work by Sam Burt, and two meandering field recordings - one of which caps off the album with the definitive declaration by Waning Gibbous creator Brett Kelly that, “That’s the end”.

The longest piece on the album, this song gives some insight into the way players interact and evolve sounds over the course of a Waning Gibbous recording session. Use your imagination with the theme of the Hunter’s Moon in mind and a long story may unfold for you here.

A cross between an electric-instrument driven basement noise-jam and a field recording of five Waning Gibbous members sitting beneath a ‘Blood Moon’ lunar-eclipse combo, playing acoustic instruments. This track bridges the acoustic / electric / outer-space divide as only Waning Gibbous can.

You'll hear a little of President J.F. Kennedy’s voice through a thick fog of delay in the introduction to this lunar-landing inspired space-jam. This track, driven by the synthesizer work of Sam Burt, is underscored by a deep-field recording of swooping synth and sample experimentation made by Maya Khasin and Emily Wynn in Lincoln.

A warm and drifting calm makes its way through to the end of this song after a big harmonic decrescendo (tornado?) at the outset. It features the pedal steel work of Sam Burt along with a return electric piano performance from Nat Fairbanks.

Ambient, Experimental, Improvisational, Electro-Acoustic, Space Music
Fuzzy loops, chirping guitar effects, distorted microphones, and multi-layer keyboards, this fifth Waning Gibbous experiment takes the debut album in a viscerally ‘springtime’ direction. Recorded in March, 2015.

Ambient, Experimental, Improvisational, Electro-Acoustic, Space Music
This track features ambient conversation, home sounds, and haunting leading guitar lines. It is a mix of these elements, recorded in a basement in Lincoln, laced over a big bubbling texture of guitars and drums recorded in Omaha during the same full moon evening. It features electric guitars by Jesse Butterfield (Thundersandwich, Pure Brown) and Brett Kelly. Snow Moon Road is the fourth track from Waning Gibbous' self-titled debut album, and was recorded in February 2015.

A slightly more composed, ‘classically ambient’ piece. Long swells, loops, and recording experimentation characterize the lo-fi ambience found here. This track was also the first Waning Gibbous song ever publicly released.

Featuring notable Omaha punk musicians Alex Loth on percussion and Jay Nesmith on electric piano / organ, this unique, organic piece also highlights Sam Burt and Brett Kelly’s electric guitars, and Jon Ochsner using a sampler and cassette tape.

A noisy soundscape of droning heaters, crunching leaves, overly-delayed guitars and distorted samples were the homages of only one Waning Gibbous member to the illness and absence of two others on the full-moon-eve in early November 2014, which had been planned to be the first Waning Gibbous session.
